Using mathematical writing in the primary classroom

The goal of my research was to determine which methods and types of assignments could be used to teach writing in math. From a select group of assignment types, I determined which type best-demonstrated student understanding of mathematical concepts in the primary grades. The four assignment types I selected were writing word problems, explaining solutions to problem solving questions, explaining answers to specific concept questions, and deciding who\u27s right questions. By having students write about their mathematical ideas and understandings, teachers are able to see where students have a solid foundation of a mathematical concept and where they still have misconceptions. Overall, I found that having students write about their mathematical thoughts was beneficial for both teacher and student and that many types of writing assignments were successful in demonstrating students\u27 understanding of mathematical concepts
