Can students\u27 attitudes towards the importance of recycling be improved through understanding the process of recycling as it begins in the school environment?

The purpose of this project is to educate third grade students about the importance of recycling and gauge how their attitudes change in regards to recycling throughout the study. Research is presented on the benefits, motivations, outcomes, and detriments of recycling. Yearly statistics about recyclables and trash are provided for the United States. Recycling processes are explained. One section of the paper focuses on current elementary literature in regards to recycling. An overview of the third grade recycling unit is provided, with student examples of activities performed during the unit. Similar studies are also examined and compared with this one, and several references for the topic of recycling are provided. Results found that students gained knowledge about recycling, but there was not a significant amount of change in their attitudes towards the importance of recycling
