Shame in Middle Eastern Muslims a Literature Review Toward Clinical Implication

Researchers have studied shame formulation and provided treatment suggestions for clinical work with shame-induced psychopathology in the West. Further, evidence has indicated collectivistic cultures have some formulation of shame and each population has a different understanding of shame. However, Islamic Middle Eastern cultures may face further issues due to a combination of both collectivistic and Islamic dynamics. Considering the extent of religious influence on religious Muslims, this dynamic requires more extensive study to understand shame and its functional and dysfunctional roles. This paper includes a detailed literature review of shame in collectivistic cultures and Islamic communities to show clinical implications for working on shame with Middle Eastern Muslims
