K-12 School-Based Interventions Effective with Children and Adolescents from Divorced Families

The research on the effects of divorce on children and adolescents is growing as the divorce rates in the United States are climbing. There are many negative effects of parental divorce and separation on children and adolescents that are discussed within this paper, including decreases in self-esteem and self-worth, declines in academic performance and dysfunction emotional adjustment. The purpose of this study is to examine and outline effective researchbased school counseling interventions that can be used in K-12 school settings with children and adolescents from these types of families. This study also examines the underlying therapeutic processes and functions that take place within these interventions to help students experience positive post-divorce emotional adjustment
