The field of political socialization research, created in the late 1950s in the United States with the cooperation of psychologists, political scientists, and sociologists, is a relatively young field of study having received its academic citizenship only recently. In the early 1960s, large numbers of studies were concentrated in this field, and there was a boom of sorts in political socialization research. In this paper, I shall note the historical factors accounting for the field\u27s creation and discuss the basic ideological research assumptions evident in the early research, after which I shall critically review this early research in light of later results.
