The paper deals with the limits of applicability of Lijphart’s typology of democracies vis-a-vis data from Central and Eastern Europe. Two alternative outlines of democratic typologies devised by Steffen Ganghof and André Kaiser are presented and an operationalization of their key dimensions is attempted. The typologies are then used for the determination of types of democracy in CEE. Finally, the typologies are evaluated on the basis of their results and avenues for further research in this domain are suggested
