Negotiating New Territory: Indian Jewish Women and Families in Toronto

This article explores the obstacles that Indian Jewish women faced in the immigration and settlement process in Toronto between 1964 and 1980. I argue that the feminization of domestic labour created new and unforeseen challenges for Indian Jewish women in family life in the aftermath of arriving in Toronto. These challenges reflect not simply that they became solely responsible for the mundane performance of domestic labour and childcare, but also the importance of these tasks in maintaining Indian Jewish culture and identity within the family.Cet article analyse les obstacles que les femmes juives indiennes ont rencontrés lors de leur immigration et installation à Toronto entre 1964 et 1980. J’estime que la féminisation du travail domestique est à l’origine de défis nouveaux et inattendus pour les femmes juives indiennes dans leur vie familiale après leur arrivée à Toronto. Ces défis reflètent comment ces femmes sont non seulement devenus les seules responsables des tâches domestiques quotidiennes mais reflètent aussi l’importance de ces tâches dans le maintien de l’identité et de la culture juive indienne de la famille
