In his first and only novel, The Catcber in the Rye, J.D. Salinger writes about the loneliness of a sixteen-year-old boy, Holden Caulfield, who cannot stand the egoism and cruelty of the people around him. Holden wants to be a deaf-mute and to live where nobody knows him. His only dream for his future is to be "the catcher in the rye", to be the only grown-up in a field of rye among innocent children to protect them from the evil of the world. J.D. Salinger sympathizes with Holden and understands his desire for escape, but he also knows that Holden is seriously ill as this world is ill in the other way.
