Henry Jamesにおける意識の問題 : The Turn of the Screwを中心とする

As a psychological novelist, Henry James emphasizes the importance of imagination in literature. We remember this when we read The Turn of the Screw. The governess is, as it were, an incarnation of the Jamesian \u27imaginative creature.\u27 She is in a dilemma and is not sane, as her retrogression is too enormous for her to be said to be normal. We can realize however, certain aspects of consciousness through her retrospective story. A man can not get away from consciousness, whatever it may be, once he has it. He can not have an objective and perspective view of his own consciousness as long as his stream of consciousness continues, but if we carefully trace the governess\u27 consciousness, we will find another element in it, her personal unity. Anyway, her story suggests to us much about the consciousness which is hidden under our daily life
