Urban morphology and celebration of faith: Reflections about the structure of Largo da Misericórdia in Rio de Janeiro

The places for the celebration of faith in Rio de Janeiro were a focus of dispute between the various Roman Catholic religious orders in the initial settlement that would centuries later become the present day metropolis. However, one place - known as Largo da Misericórdia - stands out for its social and cultural uses, its landscape values, its morphology that influenced the city’s structural development and, ironically, for being one of the few colonial sites that has held the same name since the second half of the 16th century. In spite of urban fragmentation, the result of the contemporary metropolitan dynamics, the place was the first largo of the city and its structure still conserves traces of its original morphology, revealing an authentic residual landscape preserving much of its formal elements but with very little of the original symbolic meanings.Los lugares de celebración de la fe en Río de Janeiro se han caracterizado por disputas entre las órdenes católico-romanas establecidas en el primitivo asentamiento que daría lugar, siglos más tarde, a la actual metrópoli. El Largo da Misericórdia destaca, sin embargo, por los usos socioculturales que allí se han concentrado, los valores impregnados en el paisaje, su morfología, que influyó en la estructura de la ciudad e, irónicamente, por ser uno de los pocos sitios coloniales que aún hoy mantiene el mismo nombre desde la segunda mitad del siglo XVI. A pesar de que este paisaje se haya diluido en la fragmentación de la metrópoli contemporánea, el espacio fue el primer largo de la ciudad, y su estructura aún conserva vestigios de la morfología original, revelándose un auténtico paisaje residual, es decir, aquel que aún preserva mucho de sus elementos formales, pero poco guarda de sus significados simbólicos originales
