D・H・ロレンスと異文化

Discussing the subject problem, this essay mainly deals with D. H. Lawrence\u27s "Indians and Entertainment" in Mornings in Mexico, Etruscan Places and Apocalypse. Though, of course, it discusses Lawrence\u27s insight into the Etruscan culture and the Indian culture themselves, it also discusses his attitude towards cultures different from western culture and what is in him to respond strongly to them. Showing sympathy towards the Etruscan and Indian cultures which are apt to be looked upon as inferior to the western with respect to the intellectual or scientific point of view, Lawrence warned us against lapsing into sentimentalism in approaching them. When he criticized western civilization severely, Lawrence was acutely aware that he was soaked in it himself, and he was conscious that he had been corrupted by it. The present writer traces Lawrence\u27s critical attitude towards himself in his novels Sons and Lovers and Women in Love, in his stories "The Shadow in the Rose Garden" and "The Woman Who Rode Away", and in the memories of those with whom Lawrence was closely acquainted. In order to probe into the secret and the reason why Lawrence was so sympathetic to such cultures as the Etruscan and Indian this essay follows Lawrence\u27s delicate sensitivity to the little creatures as is shown in his poems "Lizard" and "The Mosquito ",his exquisite imagination as is shown in his novella St. Mawr and his bitter criticism of western culture as is shown in his novels The Rainbow, The Lost Girl, his critical studies Apocalypse and Studies in Classical American Literature, his essays "Hymns in a Man\u27s Life", "The Novel and the Feelings", "On Human Destiny" and so on. What has motivated the present writer to write this essay lies more than anything in his sympathy with Lawrence\u27s words, \u27Start with the sun\u27, in Apocalypse, \u27to be whole man alive: that is the point\u27, in "Why the Novel Matters", and Aldous Huxley\u27s comment on Lawrence: \u27To be with Lawrence was a kind of adventure, a voyage of discovers into newness and otherness.\u2
