Protective Potential of Piper Nigrum in Memory Impaired Rats

Background: Normal aging is associated with a slow decline in brain functions such as sensory and motor performance, and at time, this decline is accompanied by progressive memory loss, dementia and cognitive dysfunctions, ultimately resulting in limited functionality. The cognitive enhancing activity of ethanolic fruit extract of Piper longum was investigated using two methods. Induction was carried out by Diazepam for 7 days. Aim: The present research was designed to evaluate the protective effect of Piper nigrum in memory impaired rats and compared with standard drug Piracetam. It exhibited significant protective effect in all the models. Material and Methods: The acetylcholine esterase activity, oxidative stress, spatial navigation task and behavioral studies were used for the screening of protective effect of Piper nigrum. Result: This study significantly demonstrated the protective effect of Piper nigrum in all the models. Future Aspect: The further research is suggested to isolate the chemical compound of the plant responsible for the activity. So, it can be used in the treatment of dementia and memory impairments
