Influence of Spindle Speed and Depth of Cut on Feed Force in Turning Operation: An Experimental Study

Net shape components from a work piece can be produced either by metal forming process or metal cutting process. In metal forming processes the object is given shape by plastic deformation and there is no remarkable change in the mass of an object. Whereas, net shape component with complex geometrical shape, high surface finish and fine tolerance can only be produced by metal removal processes in manufacturing. Apart from the metal loss in these manufacturing processes most of the real life products are produced by metal cutting processes. This is the current topic of research among scientists and also the focus of the present paper. Extensive stresses, plastic deformation, high compressive and frictional contact stresses are developed on the tool face, which results in substantial cutting force and feed force. The present paper deals with the experimental study of influence of spindle speed and depth of cut on feed force. High precision, high productivity, less maintenance cost, tool life and low production cost is the present demand in industries, which is highly influenced by the generated forces during metal cutting. The present paper deals with the analysis of cutting mechanics in turning process on lathe, effects of two cutting parameters spindle speed and depth of cut on one component of cutting force which is feed force. The quality of manufactured object, production rate is highly influenced by feed force. Three mutually perpendicular forces are generated during metal cutting processes and theses are considered for the present study. An experimental setup was prepared on the conventional lathe with lathe tool dynamometer, to measure the generated cutting forces in all directions.
