An examination of factors impacting the quality of music education in the urban environment

This examination investigates common problems and solutions that occur in urban music education. By focusing on teacher preparation and attrition, lack of funding and need for assessment, public relations and advocacy, and student motivation, educators can be made aware of solutions and strategies available to overcome numerous challenges. These specific problems are not necessarily seen in every urban setting, however most teachers will face one or more of these challenges throughout their teaching career. Equipping teachers with essential skills is the goal of teacher preparation. Offering special incentives for professional development and additional certification endorsements provides a greater opportunities for teacher retainment. As a result of No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, funding for music education has become more difficult to attain, however, administering a national assessment and acquiring fundraising and grant writing skills are important to the financial state of urban music education. Successful advocacy will gain support of the administration, parents, and community. Public relations is an important aspect of advocacy and is essential in tackling the obstacles that are likely to occur. Without students enrolled in the music programs, these programs have little chance of survival. Successful student motivation leads to a popular and quality music program. All of these elements, when put together, are the current state of our urban music education program
