Misiones a debate. Intereses arzobispales y monárquicos en la custodia franciscana de Tampico, 1700-1750

The Franciscan custody of Tampico, north of the archbishopric of Mexico, had as a its goal the religious conversion of the Huastec and Pame Indians. At the beginning of the 18th century, this region presented a greater social complexity due to the presence of other non-Indian groups. The friars had achieved an important level of organization in the missions, similar to the parishes. The phenomenon was perceived by different social, political, economic and ecclesiastical actors, who sought to change their direction and obtain income from them. An archbishop wanted to convert them into parishes and the Crown raised an ecclesiastical subsidy. Consequently, the Franciscans defended the missionary regime, arguing that the missions were living a precarious situation and, therefore, that they should continue leading.La custodia franciscana de Tampico, al norte del arzobispado de México, tuvo como meta la conversión religiosa de los indios huastecos y pames. Al iniciar el siglo XVIII esta región presentaba una mayor complejidad social debido a la presencia de otros grupos no indios. Los frailes habían conseguido un nivel importante de organización en las misiones, similar a las parroquias. El fenómeno fue percibido por diferentes actores sociales, políticos, económicos y eclesiásticos, quienes buscaron cambiar su rumbo y obtener rentas de ellas. Un arzobispo quiso convertirlas en parroquias y la Corona recaudó un subsidio eclesiástico.
