Colonel Lucio V. Mansilla, military chief of the border of Río Cuarto, in the Argentine Pampa, published in 1870 the narration of his diplomatic mission Una excursión a los indios ranqueles. Being one of the most interesting works of the Argentine literature of the 19th century, it has been studied from different points of view. Here we propose a review from the perspective of the historiography on the colonial and post-colonial American frontiers. A new perspective of analysis in this field starts from considering to the frontier zones as entities different so much from the national States as from the indigenous world in strict sense: half-caste, relatively autonomous ambiences at the same time articulated with the factors of economic, social and political power both of the State and of the indigenous world. In this respect, Mansilla contributes a valuable recognition of this alternative, informal world, supported by a network of interpersonal bonds constituent of the political power, in the same way that the social framework of the Argentine interior that the liberal elites of Buenos Aires were ignoring. His look contributes us a better knowledge of the past and present reality of the frontier of interethnic contact of the Pampa.El coronel Lucio V. Siendo una de las obras más interesantes de la literatura argentina del siglo XIX, ha sido estudiada desde distintos puntos de vista. Aquí proponemos una revisión desde la perspectiva de la historiografía sobre las fronteras coloniales y poscoloniales americanas. Una nueva perspectiva de análisis en ese campo parte de considerar las zonas de frontera como entidades diferentes tanto de los Estados nacionales como del mundo indígena propiamente dicho: ámbitos mestizos, relativamente autónomos y al mismo tiempo articulados con los factores de poder económico, social y político tanto del Estado como del mundo indígena. En este sentido, Mansilla aporta un valioso reconocimiento de ese mundo alternativo, informal, sostenido por una red de lazos interpersonales constituyentes del poder político, del mismo modo que del entramado social del interior argentino, que las élites liberales porteñas ignoraban. Su mirada nos aporta un mejor conocimiento de la realidad pasada y presente de la frontera de contacto interétnico de la Pampa
