Pedro Claver y la evangelización en Cartagena: Pilar del encuentro entre africanos y el Nuevo Mundo, siglo XVII

The article analyzes the Pedro Claver canonization process which shows his work of evangelizing African people in Cartagena de Indias during the 17th Century. The main objective is to understand the saint’s utility in the identity formation in the port. The article proposes the saint served in the process of making the Christian religion one of the aspects of that identity; secondly, he helped in generating alliances between European factions who were looking for the economic and political control in the port.El artículo analiza el documento de canonización de Pedro Claver referido a la evangelización de los africanos que realizó en Cartagena de Indias en el siglo XVII. El objetivo es interpretar la labor y la utilidad del santo en la formación identitaria del puerto. En particular, se propone que el santo fue útil para hacer del cristianismo uno de los pilares de esa identidad y generó alianzas entre los sectores europeos que se hallaban en pugna por el control político y económico del puerto
