Sobre el uso del término mestizo en la historiografía de la historia de las imágenes en Chile. Una propuesta crítica

 This article assesses, from a critical standpoint, the widespread use of the word mestizo among scholars to single out images that existed but were not produced in Santiago de Chile during the Colonial period, but imported from the main centers of visual production in the Andes region (Lima, Cuzco, Alto Peru and Quito). This paper will discuss the main uses of the word mestizo in art historiography, with an emphasis on the perspective of the “Andean Baroque”. The principal aspects of handicraft trade within Santiago are considered, with an eye to the common misuse of the tag mestizo, as grounded in allegedly racial and local features displayed by the objects themselves. The paper proposes an alternative way of validating the concept, focused on the local reception and appropriation of foreign objects by the local communities, and the relation between the foreign images and the local mestizaje.Este trabajo problematiza la calificación de mestizo que reciben las imágenes coloniales que no fueron producidas en Santiago de Chile durante la Colonia, sino que provienen de los principales centros de producción visual de la zona andina (Lima, Cuzco, Alto Perú y Quito). Se discuten las oscilaciones del término mestizo en la historiografía del arte, con énfasis en las miradas sobre el “Barroco andino”. Se da cuenta también de la importación hacia Chile de tales objetos y su comercio en Santiago; y se revisan los errores más comunes a la hora de calificarlos como mestizos y relacionarlos sumariamente con la realidad racial local. Se proponen otros modos alternativos de interpretar las dinámicas mestizas, ancladas en la recepción, el uso de los objetos, así como en un mestizaje relacional
