Don Joaquín Cusí Furtunet Primer Farmacéutico Especialista en la Preparación de Medicamentos Oftalmológicos

The main objective of this monographic study goes to try to avoid the forgetfulness, and to recognize as well as to thank the resolved effort of a very vocational Spanish and Catalan, pharmacist, to find the more active and more comfortable formulation medication for the patients. Don Joaquín Cusí Furtunet centered his biggest interest in the pharmaceutical investigation and in the technological analysis in order to get: initially, masterful formulas of therapeutic principles, and later on, pharmaceutical specialities that were prescribed as a safe drug, effective medication and a pharmaceutical product of good quality. And, in spite of the poor working conditions of the scientific backwardness of those years, his task supposed a considerable advance in that time, but even at the present time: some of the medicaments developed by him, continue being used today. This studious, intelligent and imaginative pharmacist, characterized by his strong will and his perseverance in achieving professional progress, began installing his first dispensing pharmacy shop in Figueres (one town near to Girona), although many of his course partners made their own in Barcelona (the most important city in Catalunyan). From Figueres he irradiated the importance of his works to all the directions and to many parts of the world. He ended up establishing the “Laboratorios del Norte de España” that finally became denominated “Laboratorios Cusí”, whose name is internationally known. Also, Don Joaquín Cusí Furtunet was an important collector, especially of books and apparatus related with the Pharmacy and with the Medicine. With the interesting pieces of his collections, and with the “Antigua Botica (pharmacy) del Real Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Nájera (Benedictine Abbey of “La Rioja”), it was constituted the important Cusí Museum, a glorious tribute to more than two hundred years of history of Pharmacy and Medicine.El objetivo principal de este estudio monográfico se dirige a procurar evitar el olvido, y a reconocer, así como a agradecer, el esfuerzo decidido de un farmacéutico español y catalán, muy vocacional, para encontrar las formulaciones medicamentosas más activas y más cómodas para los pacientes. Don Joaquín Cusí Furtunet, centró su mayor interés en la investigación y en el análisis tecnológico farmacéutico para conseguir, inicialmente, fórmulas magistrales de principios terapéuticos, y luego, especialidades farmacéuticas, que se prescribieran como medicamentos seguros, eficaces y de calidades óptimas. A pesar de las condiciones de atraso científico de aquellos años, esto supuso un avance considerable en su época, pues todavía se utilizan algunas de las formulaciones desarrolladas por él. Este farmacéutico estudioso, inteligente e imaginativo, caracterizado por su voluntad férrea y su constancia en lograr cotas atas de progreso profesional, comenzó instalando una farmacia en Figueres (ciudad de Girona), aunque muchos de sus compañeros de curso lo hicieran en Barcelona. Desde Figueres irradió la importancia de sus trabajos hasta muchas partes del mundo y llegó a establecer los Laboratorios Norte de España, que luego se denominarían Laboratorios Cusí, reconocidos internacionalmente. También, don Joaquín Cusí Furtunet fue un coleccionista importante, especialmente de libros y de objetos relacionados con la Farmacia y la Medicina. Con las piezas interesantes de sus colecciones, y con la botica Antigua del Real Monasterio de Santa María La Mayor de Nájera (La Rioja), constituyó el importante Museo Cusí, famoso en todo el mundo
