This is a cylindrical brush holder carved from a joint of bamboo. It has three stylish feet. Its exterior is lacquered in dark brown. On one side, from right to left, it contains four incised stylized characters surrounded by tree branches. They are "fu (good fortune), lu (high official income), shou (longevity) and xi (happiness)." On the other side there is a medallion of a landscape, in which mountains, trees, a river, a boat with two people, a temple and a house are depicted. The interior of this piece is un-lacquered and plainly decorated. This brush holder was made approximately during the early 20th century. It was once used by Dr. Chao-ming Chen
