The form of this libation cup derived from that of an early jade chuëh (its archetype is the ancient bronze chuëh or jue), used as a receptacle for the warmed libation wine. The cup held the sacrificial wine offered by the 'Son of Heaven' in rituals determined by the "Book of Rites". The surface is adorned with high relief carvings of the Ch'ih lung or better known as the Archaic Dragon, an auspicious lizard-like reptile with clawless feet and a spiral bifid tail. It possessed particular powers for the guardianship of mortals
