La red SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online): perspectiva tras 20 años de funcionamiento

The article traces the almost twenty years of history of the SciELO Network and the Spanish Website of SciELO España. The model was developed by the Latin American and Caribbean Center for Collaborative Health Sciences Information (Bireme/PAHO/WHO), and specially realized to respond to the needs of scientific communication in the developing countries and particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. SciELO offers visibility and universal access, contributing thus to the overcoming of the phenomenon known as ‘lost science’, and, at the same time, promoting the improvement of the quality of their magazines.El artículo hace un recorrido por casi veinte años de historia de la Red SciELO y el portal español SciELO España. El modelo, ideado por el Centro Latinoamericano y del Caribe de Información en Ciencias de la Salud en colaboración (Bireme/OPS/OMS) fue especialmente desarrollado para responder a las necesidades de la comunicación científica en los países endesarrollo y particularmente de América Latina y el Caribe, ofreciendo visibilidad y acceso universal, contribuyendo a la superación del fenómeno conocido como ‘ciencia perdida’ y, a la vez, promocionando la mejora de la calidad de sus revistas
