This article examines the experience of the Central American region, constituted at first by the countries of Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica; from its beginnings as an entity integrated under the Spanish colony, a federation during its first years of independent life, their separation and the constitution of the present republics, and the repeated efforts to reconstitute a union initially and to achieve an integration later. The experience of the Central American Integration System (SICA) is examined, analyzing the stages of its development, the diverse paradigms that have guided the project, their projection in the multilateral arena, and their present problems and perspectives.
