Minimum Wage Increase.

MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE. INITIATIVE STATUTE. Increases the current state minimum wage of $4.25 per hour to $5.00 per hour on March 1, 1997, and then to $5.75 per hour on March 1, 1998 for all industries. Requires the California Industrial Welfare Commission to adopt minimum wage orders consistent with this section, which are to be final and conclusive for all purposes. Summary of estimate by Legislative Analyst and Director of Finance of fiscal impact on state and local governments: Would have unknown, ongoing impact on state and local government revenues, depending on the measure\u27s effect on the state\u27s economy. Would increase annual governmental costs, primarily in in-home supportive services, by about $230 million due to higher costs for goods and services. Could result in unknown annual savings, potentially in the tens of millions of dollars, due to caseload and cost changes in various health and welfare programs
