William L. Perry, M.D., oral history interview, May 1993

Dr. Laurie L. Brown, M.D., conducted this oral history interview at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in May of 1993. In this interview, Dr. William L. Perry, M.D., discusses his family, educational background, career in medicine, and participation in organized medicine, including his tenure as president of the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) from 1969 to 1970. Dr. Perry also discusses the issues surrounding the field of medicine during his term as SCMA president, which included: Medicare, the socialization of medicine, rising health care costs, the separation of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance plan from SCMA, transient care, an ongoing shortage of physicians in rural areas, and the establishment of the "A Doctor a Day" program and the passage of an osteopath bill in the State Legislature
