Abstract

Dr. Laurie L. Brown, M.D., conducted this oral history interview on December 18, 1992. Dr. Randolph D. Smoak, M.D., discusses his family, educational background, career in medicine, and his involvement in organized medicine. He also discusses his tenure as President of the South Carolina Medical Association from 1988 to 1989, and the major issues affecting the field of medicine at that time, which included: communication and public relations, the hiring of the McManus firm to restructure the association for mergers with Members Insurance Trust and the South Carolina Political Action Committee, changes resulting from the implementation of Medicare and Medicaid, and the construction of a building for the association
