Charles R. Duncan, M.D., oral history interview, April 23, 1993

This oral history interview was conducted by Dr. Laurie L. Brown, M.D., and videotaped by Dr. Allen Brown, M.D., on April 23, 1993, at the 145th Annual Meeting of the South Carolina Medical Association (SCMA) at the Omni Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina. In this interview, Dr. Charles R. Duncan, M.D., former SCMA President from 1987 to 1988, discusses his educational and professional journey in becoming a practicing opthamalogist in the area of Greenville, South Carolina, as well as the primary issues that SCMA addressed during his tenure as president. Among the most significant issues facing the medical profession and the organization during Duncan's tenure as president were public reaction to the AIDS epidemic, medical ethics, comprehensive health education, hazardous waste, and the health care reform debate. Duncan notes his contributions to SCMA during his presidency, which included the creation of the Medical Ethics Committee, and the concept for a health education van in conjuction with the state Department of Education
