Background: Adenine phosporibosyltransferase (APRT) deficiency is a metabolic disorder which is the cause of adenine oxidation to 2,8-dihydroxyadenine (DHA) instead of normal conversion to AMP. DHA is poorly soluble at physical level and therefore precipitates in urine and can cause of acute renal failure. The symptoms have been treated with allopurinol which converts to its active metabolite oxypurinol quickly after it enters the body. It is important to being able to quantify both oxypurinol and DHA in plasma for better diagnosis and treatment.
