The effects of physical activity on mental health was studied, using data from the 2008 Youth in Europe study. The aim of this study was twofold. First, to explore if physical activity predicts depression and anxiety, body-image and self-esteem. Also, to explore if levels of physical activity were similar to levels of depression and anxiety, body-image and self esteem across eleven cities around Europe. Participants were 3000 students in Europe and most of them were 14-16 years old. Partial support was found for the first hypothesis. That is, in some cities physical activity predicted depression and anxiety, body-image and self-esteem but not in others. Partial support was also found for the second hypothesis.
