The sagnakvæði, narrative poems composed in the eddic metre fornyrðislag, are found only in manuscripts from the 17th century or later. However, many of them seem to predate their manuscripts by several centuries, making them products of the later middle ages. Their composition in fornyrðislag metre and their use of motifs seen in other Icelandic literary genres of the later middle ages (most notably riddarasögur and fornaldarsögur) place them squarely within a continuous tradition of Icelandic literature. Despite this fact, relatively little scholarly attention has been paid to the sagnakvæði.
