Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) can have various harmful effects on the health of living organisms. They can be carcinogenic, affect the hormonal balance, the nervous system and the reproductive system. POPs have very long half lives in the environment and in living organisms, they are very lipophilic and accumulate in the food chain. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor these substances in nature. The main objective of this project was to analyse the levels of some POPs in the Icelandic cod (Gadus morhua) and evaluate the effect that different factors such as; sex, age, sexual maturation, location of catch, season, have on these levels.
