Collected by Judy Kinslow and Alan Rennick for Mary Celestia Parler Transcribed by Nathaniel Lucy Sung by Holly Hodges and Julius Cato Prairie Grove, Arkansas December 17, 1960 Reel 369, Item 4 Come All Kind Friends Come all kind friends and learn on me A sad and mournful history It was caused by friends and I love them well That caused me to roam through the wild foothills I knew a girl and I loved her well I loved more than tongues could tell For a lady’s love she had promised me If I were a gallant cowboy be When I returned to bring her joy To make her the wife of a brave cowboy Her parents give me good advice To stay at home and live a quiet life It was for their words I did not here And for their advice I did not care For I had a home and I loved it well All in those mountains for to dwell We rode along for nine long hours Before we’d reached - - - I’ll tell to you an awful tale We met some Indians on our trail Well the wolves they howled and - - - And a bear climbs up those mountains tall Last night our bed was snow and sleet And not one moment could we sleep If I had wings like a dove I’d fly Away out West where the cowboys lie With a - - - we have gained our name Of a great cowboy away on the plain Alan Rennick: That is good.
