A lady lived in Lanchester

Feb. 6, 1964 Reel 437 Item 1 Old Fullucifer ( Kate and Her Horns) A lady lived in Lanchester A young man came a-courting her; He courted her both night and day, But still the fair maid said, "Nay! Nay!" He courted her 'till she gave consent, And then away to the world he went And courted the lawyer's daughter fair And left poor Kate, all in despair. Kate she knew every night he came To see his sweetheart, Nancy by name, So at ten o'clock one night or more Down to the tan yard she did go. All for to borrow an old cow hide, Six feet long and three feet wide, All for to wrap herself up in; There mischief now for to begin. Down the lonely path she strode; She knew that her lover would come that road, And he was so desperately frightened at her, He thought she was old Fullucifer. Kate, she took him by the coat And grinned at him with a terrible look, Saying, "You've courted the lawyer's daughter fair And left poor Kate all in despair." "Pray, Mister Satan, spare me now, And I'll prove true to my former vow, For if Kate to you has made complaint Thou might come hence for me again." Then he went home in terrible fright, And the very next morning as soon as daylight, He went to Kate and he married her For the fear of old Fullucifer.
