April 15, 1950 Young Chalotti Young Chalotti lived on a mountain side in a mountain level spot, There's not a dwelling five miles around except her father's cot, At a village fifteen miles away there's a merry ball tonight, Though the air is freezing death made cold, our hearts are warm and light. Twas New Year's Eve and the sun was low and she beamed her wandering eye, And she went through the frozen wind, oh, she went and watched the sleighs go by; At last she spied a well known sleigh come dashing to the door, And next she heard young Charley's voice though loud the wind did roar. Oh, daughter, dear, the mother said, this blanket round you fold, There's a deathly storm abroad tonight, you'll catch your death of cold; No, no, Chalotti laughed and said, and she looked like a Gypsy queen, To ride with a blanket muffled up I never could be seen. My cloak and bonnet is enough, 'tis lined on in and out(?), Beside I have a silken scarf to twine my neck about, Her cloak and bonnet soon was on, she stepped into the sleigh, And o'er the hill by the mountain side in silence they flew away. Such nights, said Charley, I never knew; these lines I can scarcely hold, While Chalotti added a frozen tone, I'm growing very cold; He cracked his whip, he urged his team much faster than before, And o'er the hill by the mountain side in silence they passed o'er. The ice, said Charley, is freezing fast; 'tis gathering or my brow, While Chalotti added these few words, I'm growing warmer now. He drove up to the tavern door, young Charley got out and said, Why set you there like a monument? Why, surely you're not dead. He asked once, he called her twice, he asked her three times o'er, He took a ... and, oh, God, they're cold to warm no more. Twas there he crept down by her side, faced the bitter chore(?), Saying, Here's ry only blooming bride; you ne'er shall know any more.
