We have had and always shall have problems. Life without them, perhaps, would be drab. It will lose the challenge and the thrill of solution that makes every animal love life itself - that makes us, without exception, desire to live. The American Way of Life produces great men who can solve great problems. The American accomplishment during the War period and the ensuing months is the marvel of all history. This same human ingenuity, with a coming generation this is better equipped than any predecessor, can solve these problems. Unparalleled Opportunities Ahead We are entering a period of unparalleled opportunities. In 1941, we were forced into a war of gigantic proportions. Tragic as were the consequences, this war has given us many, many blessings. This War was truly one of science. It became necessary for us to match the best brains in the world. We were forced to marshall every research facility in this country and in a space of a few years to conduct scientific investigations which ordinarily might well have taken many decades. Billions of dollars were poured into this research. Under the threat of possible extinction, men thought as they never thought before. The result is that we have pierced far into the future in many parts of the vast uncharted universe. We have already put to use some of the results of this extensive, war- time research, but the time has been altogether too short for us to touch that enormous body of knowledge which holds so much promise for the future. In the years ahead we shall see a stream of new materials, new machines, new products, new industries, and new services. The extent of this development will be governed solely by the imagination and the effort with which we handle these potentialities. These developments touch almost every field of human endeavor, including electronics, metallurgy, power generation, medicine, housing, chemistry, radio, air conditioning and agriculture.
