Education for Free Men Every moment of each of our lives contains historic possibilities for ourselves and others. Do you doubt it? Then recall, if you will, that moment, that inimitable moment at the age in your life when it could really be appreciated, your first date. Now I say that moment contained historic possibilities, for thereafter surely your life was different, more complicated, and someone else's life was different, more complicated, for better or for worse. The magic moment today, when a diploma is placed in your eager hands, should be - and I am sure is - a moment of great meaning for you. It will mark at least the completion of certain formal academic requirements which have been set by the faculty of the University of Arkansas. What more will it mean to you? Will you be able to see this moment in its full-orbed meaning? That in your individual, personal, and unique experience you at this moment exemplify, or ought to exemplify, the function and promise of education? Surely we can assume it makes a difference that you have "experienced" a college education, or a year of graduate work, or training for a mor
