-19- The study of science and history offers an opportunity to become acquainted with accurate and critical knowledge about ourselves and our environment. It yields that basis of verifi- able and critically agreed upon knowledge, which is called "truth", and on which a confident faith may he built. The study of philosophy affords the best opportunity for the wise selection of appropriate and attainable goals and purposes. Furthermore, philosophy and ethics suggest ways of coordinating knowledge and clarifying meaning and motives. The study of literature, poetry, the drama, the plastic and graphic arts, music, and ritual, provides an understanding of the ways whereby goals and purposes may be achieved. The coordination of these elements of liberal culture remains the responsibility of each person if individual freedom is to persist. A major factor in the operation of democracy is fair-play. This is a prime personal responsibility in individual freedom
