Nevertheless, if we are to maintain our individual freedom and our democratic effort toward social unity, we must urge the elements of a liberal education on all. It is not necessary that the technical details of science, history, the arts and philosophy be mastered by all. It is essential, however, that everyone in a democracy be acquainted with the functions and significance of these basic factors in our culture. To stimulate a lasting curiosity in science and history, to promote a continuing appreciation of the arts, to inspire an expanding respect for logic, aesthetics and ethics, to impart an abiding interest in liberal culture, so that liesure can profitably be used for its enjoyable study all through life, these are the worthy goals of education in a democratic society, and the measure of the success of its teachers
