Speech announcing Hays' candidacy in the Arkansas gubernatorial race-3- rural and urban citizens. I will seek also to add to the contentment of our senior citizens who have earned an easier road in the afternoon of their lives. If this sounds like something for everybody, that is just what I intend, for I believe no segment of the population should be denied a share in the wealth we are capable of creating. But I propose, while seeking the help of wise leaders and listening sympathetically to those who have aspirations for an improved lot in life, to determine decisions, not on the basis of political pressures, but to assume responsibility for final judgments. I will respect the independence of the legislature and will seek the improvement of its procedures. I will pursue a spirit of cooperation with the Federal officials who, even when acting on wrong assumptions, have our best interests at heart. I have had an additional incentive to enter this race. I am confident that with the help of my fellow Democrats we can unite to win in the fall election and give to Arkansas an impressive record based upon the historic principles of the Democratic party
