You, of course, know better than I, the conditions in our schools and the meager standard of living we afford our teachers. It is inexcusable that this great country spends more annually on cosmetics, on drink, and on amusements than it does on the education of its young people. It is disgraceful that teaching, the most important of all the professions in a democracy, should be the poorest paid of any activity requiring comparable talent and training.
