The Role of Education in Foreign Affairs

Hoover, were used to start the Belgian-American Educational Foundation for the promotion of understanding, good will and peace. As a result of this action, several hundred Belgian students came to America and a lesser number of Americans went to Belgium. Many of the Belgians later occupied places of great influence in their country. Several of the students became members of the Cabinet in the Belgian Government and a large percentage of the professors in the universities of Belgium were recipients of these grants. Here again, friendly relations between the people of Belgium and our country were promoted. Beginning with the creation of the interdepartmental Committee on Scientific and Cultural Cooperation in 1938, our government gave further emphasis to the real importance of educational activities in the international field and undertook to coordinate and sustain the systematic development of work in this field.
