Page 33 XII. Conclusion The South has come a long way on its road to economic well-being. Its goal is in sight, but it must still make substantial progress before it reaches that goal. The difficulties ahead are not insurmountable if we tackle them with confidence and imagination. The Federal Government has an important role to play in the development of the South; Indeed, it is in the interest of the entire Nation that it do so, for the prosperity of the whole depends on the general well-being of its parts. The greater portion of the effort must, however, be made by the South itself. We have the potentialities.
