8 Campbell Grove (Historic Hawthorn: a photographic essay)

Photograph taken by Swinburne student, Lou Johns, as part of a design project in conjunction with the Hawthorn Historical Society. Historic Hawthorn: a photographic essay - The wide range of Hawthorn’s Victorian architecture, from cottage to mansion to iconic site, has been recorded in photographs taken by the Swinburne Graphic Design students in the 1970s for a project undertaken in association with the Hawthorn Historical Society. The students worked under the direction of Alan Campbell-Drury, Photography Lecturer and Robert Francis, then Swinburne Lecturer in Graphic Design and Art Director Studio Manager of the ‘Design Studio’. The Swinburne Design Studio accepted commissions for students to work on (as part of their studies) under the supervision of their lecturer. Fees were paid for the projects, though encouragement was given to taking no-fee projects of social significance or from charitable or non-profit making organisations. There have been several exhibitions of the Historic Hawthorn collection and some of the photographs are included in Hawthorn Peppercorns, a history of the settlement of Hawthorn by Gwen McWilliam. The photographs record parts of Hawthorn which have now disappeared and in this way contribute to the presentation of the past. They also represent the community’s close links with Swinburne’s cooperative education scheme and Swinburne’s standing within the world of graphic design
