Leaf from Justinian's Corpus juris civilis ('Digest')

One leaf from Justinian's Corpus juris civilis from Bologna, ca. 1238. Text is arranged in double columns and is decorated with red and blue two-line initials with dense glossing and contrasting penwork lines. Three manicules present near primary text.Single folio on vellum. Italy, probably Bologna, dated 1238 (based on information provided by seller) and certainly first half of the thirteenth century. 435 x 272 mm, essentially the entire page full of writing. Double columns of text in 40 lines, surrounded by dense glossing. Additional glossing in a later hand. Decoration: in the text: two-line initials in blue with single penwork lines in red; in the gloss: alternating red and blue two-line initials with contrasting penwork lines. Condition: affected by severe cockling, water damage that has led to a faded (but still legible) text, and a small tear along the top, affecting the gloss only. Text: unidentified but almost certainly from Book 50, Title 16 or 17
