Pen and ink drawing (undated) of William Henry Seward (1801-1872), former Governor of New York, U.S. Senator and Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson. On the same night (April 14, 1865) that Lincoln was assassinated at Ford's Theatre by John Wilkes Booth, Seaward was attacked in his home by co-conspirator Lewis Powell. Help provided by his son, and a soldier assigned to protect him, enabled Seward to survive a brutal knife assault
