The purpose of this article is to clarify issues concerning English education at Iwate Prefectural University (IPU) by analyzing the test results and a student survey. The curriculum reform of English Education will be implemented in 2015 at IPU and it is important to investigate IPU students\u27 English ability as well as their self-study and motivation in order to develop better ways of teaching.Analyzing the data and the survey results reveal the following challenges to students and instructors at IPU; i) average test score declines over time, ii) students do not spend enough time on self-study, and iii) students also find it difficult to secure appropriate ways to study English outside of class.
