岩手県立大学入学生の英語学習に関する諸問題 : 2014 年度入学生のケーススタディ

The purpose of this article is to clarify issues concerning English education at Iwate Prefectural University (IPU) by analyzing the test results and a student survey. The curriculum reform of English Education will be implemented in 2015 at IPU and it is important to investigate IPU students\u27 English ability as well as their self-study and motivation in order to develop better ways of teaching.Analyzing the data and the survey results reveal the following challenges to students and instructors at IPU; i) average test score declines over time, ii) students do not spend enough time on self-study, and iii) students also find it difficult to secure appropriate ways to study English outside of class. These suggest that the most important matter in our curriculum reform is to motivate students well in proper ways.Beginning 2015, IPU will offer two types of English courses: one aiming at acquiring basic skills and the other for communication skills. By offering these different types of courses, we attempt to connect English basic skills with communication skills.
