Sulforaphane is an isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables and is the most concentrated in fresh broccoli sprouts. Research in animal and human models with this compound has shown that it can improve cognition and negative symptoms in brains with mental illness or injury. In this experiment, healthy college age participants were given a one-time dosage of fresh broccoli sprouts and were asked to complete various cognitive tasks. No significant change in long term or short term memory was found. This could be due to the idea that sulforaphane only improves atypical cognition, that a larger effective dosage was needed to cause a change, or that chronic sulforaphane treatments are needed to cause an effect
