The reactions of 1,1,3,3,5,5-hexamethylcyclotrisilazane with water and ethylene glycol

The reactions between 1, 1, 3, 3, 5, 5-hexamethylcyclo trisilazane (HMCT) and water, and HMCT and ethylene glycol were performed and studied to determine their potential for producing polysiloxazanes and/or siloxazane oligomers. Three HMCT/Water reactions were carried out, each at a 1:1 molar ratio. Two HMCT/Ethylene Glycol reactions were performed, both at a 1:1 molar ratio. After characterization via infrared spectroscopy, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and 29Si-NMR spectroscopy, the major products appear to be siloxanes and siloxane oligomers. Attempts to drive polycondensation reactions resulted in minor physical and chemical change. The reactions appear to be more destructive than anticipated. That is, results suggest multiple oxygen moieties have reacted with a single HMCT molecule. Also, evidence supports a conclusion that the multiple reactions are regiospecific in nature
