Donelson was in command of a battalion of the 2d Texas Cavalry and was in the provost marshal's office at Fredericksburg." rejoined his regiment in October 1862 and was elected major on October 8. In January 1863 Donelson learned that he had tuberculoisis. He resigned the following January as a result of the disease. He apparently died that spring and was burried at San Antonio.
