An Ecocritical Study on William Wordsworth and Nader Naderpour’s Poetry

AbstractWith the increasing of ecological crisis, there are lots of ecological studies about the environmental problems. Ecocriticism emerged in the 1990s as a field of study that focuses on the relationship of human and nature. Hence, Romantic poetry and particularly William Wordsworth and Nader Naderpour’s poetry, are the most interesting subjects for the ecocritical studies in literature. William Wordsworth (1770-1850) is the greatest poet of Romantic age and a worshiper of nature. Also Nader Naderpour (1929-2000) is one of the contemporary Persian Poets whose poetry dealing with Romantic tendencies more than the other Iranian poets, he also makes intensive use of nature in his poems. Both Wordsworth and Naderpour compose poems about nature and through them they encourage the equality and harmony between nature and human beings. Due to the considering of nature in their poems, an ecocritical studying of them is applicable here. This comparative study aims at investigating different approaches towards nature employed by the two poets. There has been some critical works on Wordsworth and Naderpour’s poetry from different points of view separately, but no comparative study has been done from ecological aspect. Through the exploration of nature in Wordsworth and Naderpour’s poetry, this paper tries to encourage the modern man to look at nature as an equal to himself. In fact, man’s feeling of being superior to nature, is the major factor for the environmental destruction. So that, with a deep thinking about man’s existence in this natural world, he would get dependence on his surroundings. It is evident that both poets try to encourage the modern man to respect and protect nature and treat all the creatures in the world equally to himself, this is exactly in accordance with the aim of all ecologists
